Assessment of students' perception of the academic environment in a Rio de Janeiro Dentistry course

Resumo: This study aimed to assess the students' perception of the teaching environment of an undergraduate dental course at a public university in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Sociodemographic data of 233 students enrolled in the second semester of 2018 was collected. The academic environment was assessed using the DREEM questionnaire. The mean total score of the DREEM was 106.96 and the domains learning, teachers, academic, atmosphere and social were, respectively, 26.78; 24.02; 16.20; 25.62 and 14.34. Pedagogical practices that were not focused on students, generated insecurity and were not committed to the development of autonomy were identified. Although the perception of the total score of the academic environment was more positive than negative, all evaluated domains need improvement. There is a need for use active teaching methodologies and improvements in psychological support for students' mental health.

Se recogieron datos sociodemográficos de 233 alumnos matriculados en el segundo semestre de 2018. La evaluación del entorno docente se realizó mediante el cuestionario DREEM. La media de la puntuación total de DREEM fue 106,96 y los dominios aprendizaje, profesores, académico, ambiente y social fueron, respectivamente, 26,78; 24,02; 16,20; 25,62 y 14,34. Se identificaron prácticas pedagógicas no enfocadas en los estudiantes, generadoras de inseguridad y no comprometidas con el desarrollo de la autonomía. Aunque la percepción del puntaje total del ambiente académico fue más positiva que negativa, todos los dominios evaluados necesitan mejorar. Existe la necesidad de utilizar metodologías de enseñanza activa y mejoras en el apoyo psicológico para los estudiantes. Este estudo tem por objetivo avaliar a percepção de estudantes a respeito do ambiente de ensino de um curso de Odontologia de uma universidade pública do estado do Rio de Janeiro. Foram coletados dados sociodemográficos de 233 estudantes matriculados no segundo semestre de 2018. A avaliação do ambiente de ensino foi realizada por meio do questionário DREEM. A média do escore total do DREEM foi de 106,96 e dos domínios aprendizado, professores, acadêmico, atmosfera e social foram, respectivamente, 26,78; 24,02; 16,20; 25,62; e 14,34. Práticas pedagógicas pouco centradas nos alunos, geradoras de insegurança e não comprometidas com o desenvolvimento da autonomia foram identificadas. Embora a percepção do escore total do ambiente acadêmico tenha sido mais positiva do que negativa, todos os domínios avaliados necessitam de aprimoramentos.
