The psychoanalysis of the norma: Arthur Ramos and the Brazilain League of Mental Hygiene League

This article analyzes the texts published by Arthur Ramos in the Brazilian Archives of Mental Hygiene, a journal maintained by the Brazilian League of Mental Hygiene. The Technique of Child Psychanalysis (1933), The Theft of Schoolchildren (1934) and Elementary Physical Education (from the point of view of characterology) (1935), conceptualize therapeutic and corrective actions as fundamental for prevention of mental illness and affirm the approximations between mental hygiene, psychoanalysis and education. Our problem is to understand how psychological knowledge was among the elements of the expansion of psychiatric power in Brazil. Our method consisted in describing the theoretical elaborations and, for our analysis, we work with the notions proposed by Foucault on the constitution of the disciplinary devices. Finally, we emphasize child sexuality and childhood as political categories that meant, as an intervention object, the guarantee of the modernization of the country and the overcoming of irrational elements.
