Resumo: | People are reaching the age of one hundred years enjoying physical and mental health. This qualitative research sought to understand the meanings given to old age by centenarians. Twelve elderly widows aged 96-104 years, eight women and four men, participated in the study. The data were collected through a biosociodemographic questionnaire and an interview script, which contained three trigger questions: To what do you attribute to have lived so long? How do you describe the various moments of your life? What is the most significant thing you have in your life? The interviews were analyzed using Minayo's Content Analysis. From the thematic analysis of the narratives, categories stood out: longevity, life Experiences and Meaningful Memories. We concluded that, with the reduction of sensorial and motor capacities, there is continuity to the feeling of being oneself that, together with the participants´ spirituality/religiosity, points to gerotranscendence as a process of coping with the contingences associated to this very old age. |
