The reform of psychiatry and family associations: unity and opposition

Resumo: The investigation was carried out with family members, who sit on boards of family associations in the mental health services and who are for or against the psychiatric reform ongoing in the country. Attempts were made to understand the social reality of these associations and to identify the families' concepts about care, as well as the reasons that led them to get organized in associations with such distinct approaches. The study was based on the theoretical framework of dialectic historical materialism. Discourse analysis revealed that it is within the associations that the families find the necessary cooperation and support to care for and live with mental patients.

Se buscó comprender la realidad social e histórica de dichas asociaciones e identificar las concepciones de los parientes sobre el cuidado y las motivaciones para crear asociaciones con posturas tan distintas. El estudio se basa en el referencial teórico del materialismo histórico dialéctico; el análisis de los discursos reveló que los familiares encuentran cooperación en las asociaciones y el apoyo necesario para convivir y brindarle asistencia al enfermo mental.Esta investigação foi realizada com familiares, membros de diretorias de Associações de familiares dos serviços de saúde mental, que se posicionam contra e a favor da reforma psiquiátrica que acontece no país. Buscou-se compreender a realidade social e histórica dessas associações e identificar as concepções dos familiares sobre o cuidar e os motivos que os levaram a se organizar em associações com posições tão distintas.
