Resumo: Mammary neoplasia triggers in women a broad set of cognitive and behavioural responses focused on the developing of coping strategies to deal with internal and external strains. It is a dynamic process that demands responses at each stage of the disease. It is essential that women should develop coping abilities to face the disease's stressful context. The present study aimed to identify coping strategies developed by women diagnosed with breast cancer and tamoxifen users. This is a descriptive, cross-sectional and quantitative study carried out at Santa Rita de Cássia Hospital Ambulatory in Vitória-ES from May to September 2008 with a sample of 270 women. Al ser un proceso dinámico que exige respuestas en cada etapa de la enfermedad, resulta fundamental que las mujeres adquieran las habilidades de afrontamiento del contexto de estrés de la enfermedad. El presente estudio tuvo como objetivo identificar las estrategias utilizadas por las mujeres diagnosticadas con cáncer de mama que toman tamoxifeno. Se trata de un estudio descriptivo cuantitativo transversal de la sección. La muestra consistió de 270 mujeres atendidas en el Hospital Santa Rita de Cassia, Vitoria-ES, de mayo a septiembre de 2008. Para la recogida de datos se utilizó la Escala Formas de Afrontamiento de problemas. Las mujeres experimentan las estrategias de supervivencia con enfoque en el problema, la religión, el apoyo social y en la emoción; sin embargo, cuando se comparan, parece que la confrontación con el foco en el problema es la más utilizada (p A neoplasia mamária gera na mulher esforços cognitivos e comportamentais cujo objetivo é desencadear estratégias de enfrentamento a fim de lidar com as demandas internas e externas. Por ser um processo dinâmico e exigir respostas em cada fase da doença, torna-se fundamental que a mulher adquira habilidades de enfrentamento para lidar com o contexto estressante da doença. Nesse sentido, o objetivo com este estudo foi identificar as estratégias de enfrentamento vivenciadas por mulheres com diagnóstico de câncer de mama em uso de tamoxifeno. Trata-se de estudo descritivo, transversal, quantitativo. A amostra constituiu-se de 270 mulheres, atendidas no ambulatório do Hospital Santa Rita de Cássia, Vitória-ES, no período de maio a setembro de 2008. Para a coleta dos dados foi utilizada a escala "Modos de Enfrentamento de Problema".
