Resumo: This is the study of an ethnographic case which had the objective of understanding the experience of family members providing daily care in the home setting to a sick relative who has no therapeutic chance of cure. Sixteen informers, all women aged 29 to 83 years old, resident in Greater Belo Horizonte, State of Minas Gerais, helped in the study. Data was collected from August to November 2002. The data showed 14 cultural descriptors, 3 sub-themes and the central theme of the study. The theoretical pillars used to collect and analyze the data were Leininger and Spradley.

The theoretical pillars used to collect and analyze the data were Leininger and Spradley.Se trata de un estudio de un caso etnográfico cuyo objetivo fue entender la experiencia de familiares cuidadores que, en el ambiente domiciliario, se ocupan diariamente de un pariente enfermo sin posibilidades terapéuticas de curación. Fueron entrevistadas 16 (dieciséis) mujeres entre 29 y 83 años residentes en Belo Horizonte y en la región metropolitana. Los datos se recopilaron entre agosto y noviembre de 2002, en la ciudad de Belo Horizonte, Estado de Minas Gerais. Para la recopilación y el análisis de los datos se emplearon los fundamentos teóricos de los autores Leininger y Spradley.Trata-se de um estudo de caso etnográfico cujo objetivo foi compreender a experiência de familiares cuidadores que prestavam os cuidados diários a um parente doente, sem possibilidades terapêuticas de cura, no ambiente domiciliar. Foi desenvolvido com 16 (dezesseis) informantes, todas do sexo feminino, com idade entre 29 e 83 anos, residentes em Belo Horizonte e Região Metropolitana. A coleta de dados foi realizada no período de agosto a novembro de 2002, na cidade de Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. Emergiram dos dados 14 descritores culturais, 03 subtemas e o tema central do estudo.
