Infant mortality in Alfenas, state of Minas Gerais, 1998-2000: risk and prevention profile

Resumo: This is a cohort study to analyze the risk of infant mortality and the determining factors in the municipality of Alfenas, in the south of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The variables studied included: birth weight, length of pregnancy, age and level of schooling of the mother and the number of antenatal care visits. The highest risks were for low birth weight newborn, pre-term babies, babies of mothers under 15, babies of mothers with less than 8 years schooling and those who had fewer than 6 antenatal visits. The results show the need for systematic and networked actions in the municipality for the monitoring of mother-infant health.

The results show the need for systematic and networked actions in the municipality for the monitoring of mother-infant health.Se trata de un estudio elaborado para analizar el riesgo de mortalidad infantil de niños menores de 1 año en la ciudad de Alfenas, Sur del Estado de Minas Gerais, Brasil. Las variables analizadas fueron: peso del recién nacido, duración del embarazo, edad y escolaridad de la madre y cantidad de consultas prenatal. Los riesgos relativos más altos correspondieron a los recién nacidos de bajo peso, a los prematuros, a los hijos de madres con menos de 8 años de escolaridad y a aquéllos bebes cuyas madres tuvieron menos de consultas prenatal. Los resultados indican que es necesario implantar medidas articuladas y sistematizadas en el municipio a fin de controlar la salud materno- infantil.Trata-se de um estudo de coorte objetivando analisar o risco de morte infantil e seus fatores determinantes no município de Alfenas, Sul de Minas. As variáveis estudadas foram: peso ao nascer, duração da gestação, idade e escolaridade materna e número de consultas pré-natais. Os riscos relativos mais elevados corresponderam aos recém-nascidos de baixo peso; aos prematuros; aos filhos de mães com menos de 15 anos; aos filhos de mães com menos de oito anos de escolaridade; e daquelas que receberam menos de 6 consultas de pré-natal.
