Meanings and feelings of being elderly: social representations of elderly men living in Itajubá, south Minas Gerais

Resumo: This work aims to identify the meaning given by elderly men to the process of aging, as well as to know their feelings, facilities and difficulties faced during such period. It is an exploratory transversal study with a qualitative approach that involved 20 men who were at least 60 years old and lived in Itajubá, MG. Data analysis was performed using the Collective Subject Discourse, which is based in the Theory of Social Representations. Regarding the aspect of being elderly, the following central ideas were observed: "It is something good"; "It is a life consequence"; "I don't know"; "It is OK"; "It is not good"; "It is hard"; "Luck"; "Time has passed"; "It is life sequence"; "It is a gift from God"; and "Life with health". The feelings of being elderly were exposed by: "Good"; "Very good"; "Very satisfied"; "Young"; "Tired"; "Several feelings"; "Happiness"; "Loneliness"; "Final phase"; and "More or less". The reported facilities were: "Retirement"; "Nothing is difficult"; "Privileges"; "It doesn't change anything"; "Culture"; "Memories"; "Being healthy"; "Looking for God"; and "I don't know". Finally, the mentioned difficulties faced while being elderly were: "Nothing is difficult"; "Physical and mental activities"; "Health problems"; "Youth disrespect", "Financial problems, "Loss of opportunities", "To see how the world has changed", "Relationship with the family"; "Security"; "Loneliness"; and "Job".We can see that the meanings, feelings, facilities and difficulties faced in this period of life are widely variable.

La investigación tenía enfoque cualitativo, era tipo exploratoria y de corte transversal. El sujeto era el adulto mayor de 60 años, de la ciudad de Itajuba, Estado de Minas Gerais. La muestra estaba compuesta por 20 participantes. El método de análisis fue el Discurso del Sujeto Colectivo, basado en la Teoría de las Representaciones Sociales. Del tema ser hombre y adulto mayor surgieron las siguientes ideas centrales: algo bueno, consecuencias de la vida, no se, está bien, no es algo bueno, es difícil, suerte, el tiempo ha pasado, secuencias de la vida, dádiva de Dios, vida con salud. Los sentimientos relacionados con la vejez incluyeron: bien, y bien, muy satisfecho, joven, cansancio, varios sentimientos, felicidad, soledad. "estado terminal" y más o menos. Del tema facilidades encontradas en este período de la vida se identificaron: jubilación, nada es difícil, privilegios, nada cambia, cultura, memoria, tener salud, buscar el camino de Dios y no se. Finalmente, de las dificultades enfrentadas citamos: nada es difícil, actividad física y mental, problemas de salud, falta de respeto de la juventud, problemas económicos, pérdida de oportunidades, ver el mundo como está, relación con la familia, seguridad, soledad y empleo. Los significados, sentimientos, facilidades y dificultades encontrados en este período de la vida están muy diversificados.Os objetivos com este estudo foram identificar os significados que o homem idoso atribui a essa fase da sua vida e conhecer os sentimentos, dificuldades e facilidades com que ele entra na velhice. A pesquisa foi de abordagem qualitativa, do tipo exploratório e transversal. Os sujeitos foram homens idosos com 60 anos ou mais, residentes na cidade de Itajubá-MG. A amostra foi constituída por 20 participantes. O método de análise foi o discurso do sujeito coletivo, baseado na teoria das representações sociais. Do tema "Ser homem e idoso" emergiram as seguintes ideias centrais: coisa boa; consequência da vida; não sei; tudo bem; não é bom, é difícil; sorte; o tempo passou; sequência da vida; dádiva de deus; vida com saúde. Os sentimentos de ser idoso foram evidenciados nas seguintes ideias: "Bem"; "Muito bem"; "Muito satisfeito"; "Jovem"; "Cansaço"; "Diversos sentimentos"; "Felicidade"; "Solidão"; "Estado terminal" e "Mais ou menos". Do tema "Facilidades encontradas nessa fase da vida", identificaram-se as seguintes expressões: "Aposentadoria"; "Nada é difícil"; "Privilégios"; "Não muda nada"; "Cultura"; "Memória"; "Ter saúde"; "Procurar o caminho de Deus"; "Não sei". Finalmente, da última proposição representada pelas dificuldades vivenciadas originaram os seguintes elementos: "Nada é difícil"; "Atividade física e mental"; "Problemas de saúde"; "Desrespeito da juventude"; "Dificuldade financeira"; "Perda das oportunidades"; "Ver o mundo como está"; "Relacionamento com a família"; "Segurança"; "Solidão"; "Emprego".
