Teenagers and the experience of fatherhood: a phenomenological approach

Resumo: This is a qualitative phenomenological study which examines the experience of being a father as lived by teenagers. It was carried out at the Comprehensive Health Assistance Foundation of the Sofia Feldman Hospital. The subjects were teenagers aged between 16 and 20, partners of pregnant girls who went for their antenatal appointments. The data was collected through an open interview, guided by a questionnaire. We report five themes arising from the interviews: expecting the baby was a pleasant experience; becoming more mature through pregnancy; becoming more responsible; taking on the role of father; family as a necessary support; ambivalent feelings. The results of this work help guide assistance to teenage fathers.

Fue realizado en la Fundación de Asistencia Integral a la Salud - Hospital Sofia Feldman. Los sujetos eran adolescentes, compañeros de las embarazadas atendidas en el prenatal. Los datos se colectaron en entrevista abierta, con un cuestionario que sirvió de guía. Se identificaron los aspectos esenciales de las declaraciones y se elaboraron cinco unidades temáticas: la espera del hijo como una experiencia agradable; madurando con la paternidad; asumiendo la paternidad; la familia como soporte necesario; ambivalencia de sentimientos. Los resultados obtenidos contribuyen a orientar la asistencia al padre adolescente.Trata-se de um estudo qualitativo, na vertente fenomenológica, que visa compreender a experiência da paternidade vivenciada pelo adolescente. Foi realizado na Fundação de Assistência Integral à Saúde - Hospital Sofia Feldman. Os sujeitos foram adolescentes, companheiros das gestantes atendidas no pré-natal. Os dados foram coletados através de entrevista aberta, utilizando-se de uma questão norteadora. A partir dos aspectos essenciais emergidos dos depoimentos foram construídas cinco unidades temáticas: A espera do filho como uma experiência agradável; amadurecendo com a paternidade; assumindo a paternidade; a família como suporte necessário; ambivalência de sentimentos.
