Resumo: This study sought to capture women's understanding of Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) carried out by them and elucidate the contradictions between the reality lived and availability to carry out KMC. The setting was the Sofia Feldman Hospital, in Belo Horizonte. The subjects for the research were 15 women from the KMC Unit. To collect data a semi-structured agenda interview was used. The results revealed the dimensions of the mother-woman/mother kangaroo woman, expressing her multiple feelings in the process of adaptation to the reality of a premature baby and dedication to KMC. They indicate the ways professionals can work in assisting the mother-woman/kangaroo-mother and her child.

El escenario ha sido el Hospital Sofia Feldman/BH y los sujetos de investigación 15 mujeres de la Unidad de CMC. La recopilación de datos se efectuó mediante entrevistas semiestructuradas. Los resultados revelan las dimensiones de la mujer madre/madre canguro y expresan sus múltiples sentimientos ante el proceso de adaptación a la realidad de un hijo prematuro y de la dedicación al CMC. Senalan caminos de actuación a los profesionales en la asistencia a las mujeres madre/madre canguro y a su hijo.Este estudo buscou captar a compreensão das mulheres acerca do Cuidado Mãe Canguru (CMC) por elas realizado e elucidar as contradições entre a realidade vivida e a disponibilidade para realizar o CMC. Teve como cenário o Hospital Sofia Feldman/BH. Os sujeitos da pesquisa foram 15 mulheres da Unidade de CMC. Para coleta de dados, utilizou-se entrevista com roteiro semi-estruturado. Os resultados revelaram as dimensões do ser-mulher-mãe/mãe-canguru, expressando seus múltiplos sentimentos no processo de adaptação à realidade de um filho prematuro e da dedicação ao CMC.
