Resumo: The objective of this work was to get to know the different approaches to families by mental health as found in the mental health scientific literature. It is a review study which selected 16 articles from national and international journals, gathered from the LILACS database between 1999 and 2005. The articles were divided into the following themes: transformation of healthcare into mental health and lack of assistance to the families; families and individuals in psychic suffering; families and mental health care and Family Health Program and Mental Health. The literature has examined the importance of care for the family, in the context of the psychiatric reform and the consolidation of this reform in the Brazilian context.

Al tratarse de un estudio de revisión se seleccionaron 16 artículos de periódicos de circulación nacional e internacional, adquiridos en la base de datos LILACS, desde 1999 hasta 2005. Los artículos se dividieron en las siguientes áreas temáticas: transformación de la atención en salud mental y desasistencia a la familia; familia y el individuo en trastorno psíquico; familia y asistencia en salud mental y el Programa de Salud de la Familia (PSF) y Salud Mental. Destacamos que la literatura ha contemplado la importancia de la asistencia a la familia en la reforma psiquiátrica y en los movimientos de su consolidación dentro del contexto brasileño.Neste trabalho, o objetivo foi conhecer as diferentes abordagens de saúde mental à família, presentes na literatura científica da área da saúde mental. Trata-se de um estudo de revisão no qual foram selecionados 16 artigos de periódicos de circulação nacional e internacional, obtidos por intermédio da base de dados LILACS, entre 1999 e 2005. Os artigos foram divididos nas seguintes áreas temáticas: transformação da atenção em saúde mental e desassistência à família; a família e o indivíduo em sofrimento psíquico; a família e a assistência em saúde mental e o Programa de Saúde da Família (PSF) e Saúde Mental.
