Breast surgery: the experiences of women looking for harmony with their bodies

Resumo: This research was concerned with the experiences of women facing aesthetic or repairing breast plastic surgery, their decision making process and their expectations and feelings about the surgery. This is an Assistance Convergent Research (ACR). Twelve women aged from 21 to 49 participated in this study. The data were obtained through interview and analyzed in accordance with ACR. The results showed that women that made aesthetic or repairing breast plastic surgery intended to fulfill their physical and psychological needs and their main purpose was personal accomplishment. Some similarities and differences were observed between the two types of plastic surgery. The research concluded that nursing care can contribute to these women's physical and mental balance.

Se refiere al proceso de decisión para este procedimiento y a sus expectativas y sentimientos con relación a la cirugía. El tipo de estudio realizado fue una Investigación Convergente Asistencial (ICA). Participaron del estudio doce mujeres con edad entre 21 y 49 años. Los datos fueron recogidos por medio de entrevistas y analizados de acuerdo con el propósito de la ICA. Los resultados obtenidos revelan que las mujeres sometidas a cirugía plástica estética o reparadora en las mamas buscan reemplazar sus necesidades físicas y psicológicas para encontrar armonía con el cuerpo y lograr la realización personal. La enfermería podría contribuir al equilibrio físico y mental de estas mujeres.Nesta pesquisa, abordam-se a vivência de mulheres perante a cirurgia plástica estética e reparadora nas mamas, o processo de decisão para esse procedimento e suas expectativas e sentimentos em relação à cirurgia. Trata-se uma Pesquisa Convergente Assistencial (PCA). Participaram do estudo 12 mulheres na faixa etária entre 21 e 49 anos. Os dados foram coletados por meio de entrevista e analisados de acordo com o proposto pela PCA. Os resultados obtidos revelam que as mulheres submetidas a cirurgia plástica estética ou reparadora nas mamas buscam suprir suas necessidades físicas e psicológicas para encontrar uma harmonia com o próprio corpo e adquirir realização pessoal. Foram observadas algumas semelhanças e diferenças entre os dois ramos da cirurgia plástica.
