Resumo: Birth Centers are important in the current health policy scenery. The objective of this research is to describe the reasons why obstetric nurses work at Birth Centers. The method used for this research was based on oral history. Discontentment with obstetrical practices in hospitals, based on the biomedical model, and with the interventionist nature of hospital practices, as well as the desire of bringing about transformation resulted in the convergence of these professionals to the Birth Center. The nurses are deeply involved and committed to the success of their work because it is essential for the future of the center, as well as to other centers to be set up in Brazil.

Esta encuesta se propuso describir los motivos que llevaron a que enfermeras obstétricas se dispusieran a ejercer su labor en una casa de parto. El método de la encuesta fue la historia oral temática. La insatisfacción con la práctica obstétrica de los hospitales, basada en el modelo biomédico y de carácter intervencionista, y el consiguiente deseo de transformar esta realidad resultó en la convergencia de dichas profesionales en esta casa. En ellas se observa un profundo empeño en su trabajo pues de su éxito depende el futuro de la casa y de las demás proyectadas en Brasil.Uma Casa de Parto possui importância no cenário das políticas de saúde na atualidade. O objetivo dessa pesquisa foi descrever os motivos que levaram enfermeiras obstétricas a atuar em uma Casa de Parto. A história oral temática foi o método do estudo. O descontentamento com modelo biomédico e o caráter intervencionista das práticas hospitalares e o desejo de sua transformação resultaram na convergência das profissionais para a Casa.
