Qualitative and quantitative methodology in the evaluation of an undergraduate course

Resumo: An analysis of research that evaluates courses offered by Higher Education Institutes reveals the existence of countless works that adopt a quantitative approach. There is very little work that chooses a qualitative approach and that bring together both approaches. Considering this gap and the importance of the issue, we decided to do research that would bring about this combination. Thus, we decided to investigate the views of teachers and students in a Business Administration Course in a Higher Education Institute. Using both approaches (qualitative and quantitative), the following aspects were investigated: course expectations, opportunities offered by the intended career, opinion about the curriculum and the quality of education, reasons that interfere and/or determine changes in students around their initial expectations, relation between organizational factors and variation of students' expectations. Students were asked to answer questionnaires and were also interviewed in groups and with teachers. The research revealed that the combination of the qualitative and quantitative approaches contributed in a substantial way to deepen the understanding of the phenomenon. The research also raised new questions from the results of other work which had a quantitative approach. We believe, therefore, that the qualitative approach has much to contribute on the issue of evaluating the courses given at Higher Education Institutes.

Son raros los trabajos que optan por enfocar la investigación cualitativa o que articulan las dos. Teniendo en vista esa ausencia y el importante enfoque de esta problemática, se optó por desarrollar una investigación que garantizase esa articulación. De este modo, se buscó investigar las representaciones del cuerpo docente y dicente sobre el curso de Administración de Empresas de un Instituto de Educación Superior (IES). A partir de estas dos perspectivas (cualitativa y cuantitativa) se estudiaron las expectativas sobre el curso, posibilidades ofrecidas por la carrera pretendida, opiniones sobre la estructura curricular y la calidad de educación, motivos que interfieren y/o determinan las variaciones de comportamiento de los alumnos ante sus expectativas iniciales, relación entre factores organizacionales y variación de expectativas de los alumnos. Por lo tanto, se aplicaron cuestionarios y realizaron entrevistas con alumnos (en grupo) y con profesores. La investigación reveló que la articulación entre las perspectivas cualitativa y cuantitativa contribuyó, de modo substancial, a profundizar la comprensión del fenómeno investigado. Además, la investigación originó nuevas preguntas, propiciando, inclusive, la problematización de resultados obtenidos para otros trabajos realizados apenas a través de una forma cuantitativa. Nos parece, así, que el enfoque cualitativo contribuye mucho a la temática de la evaluación de los cursos ofrecidos por I.E.S.A análise de pesquisas que avaliam cursos oferecidos por instituições de ensino superior (IES) revela a existência de inúmeros trabalhos que adotam perspectivas quantitativas. Raros são os trabalhos que optam por abordagens qualitativas ou que articulam essas duas abordagens. Tendo em vista essa lacuna e a importância da abordagem desta problemática, optou-se por desenvolver uma pesquisa que garantisse essa articulação. Desse modo, buscou-se investigar as representações dos corpos docente e discente sobre o curso de Administração de Empresas de uma IES. A partir das duas perspectivas (qualitativa e quantitativa) foram investigadas: expectativas a respeito do curso, possibilidades oferecidas pela carreira pretendida, opiniões sobre estrutura curricular e qualidade de ensino, motivos que interferem e/ou determinam as variações do comportamento dos alunos em face de suas expectativas iniciais, relação entre fatores organizacionais e variação de expectativas dos alunos. Para tanto, foram aplicados questionários e realizadas entrevistas com alunos (em grupo) e com professores. A pesquisa revelou que a articulação entre as perspectivas qualitativa e quantitativa contribuiu, de modo substancial, para o aprofundamento na compreensão do fenômeno investigado. Além disso, a pesquisa suscitou novas questões, propiciando, inclusive, a problematização de resultados obtidos por outros trabalhos realizados apenas através de um viés quantitativo.
