Resumo: In this theoretical paper we analyze three challenges for the prevention and control of healthcare associated infections (HAIs): bacterial resistance, processing of products for health, and behavior of healthcare workers for the adoption of standards for infection control. We consider that a multifactor approach for the control of HAIs can be favored by a continuous and effective surveillance of infection, by monitoring hand hygiene and resources for effectiveness of adherence to control measures, and by emphasizing individual and collective attitudes. We highlight the responsibility of each one in order to achieve the "Zero Tolerance" strategy (response to behaviors and unsafe practices that endanger the health of patients and professionals). We contribute to the healthcare workers discussion about their co-responsibility on individual, collective and institutional quality practices, and we provide a "new way of looking" over these professionals' attitudes and thoughts.
