Resumo: This is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach that aims to identify the most vivid feelings of children's companions during perioperative period, as well as to offer a therapeutic reception and to evaluate the assistance provided to patient's family and friends. The research took place in a university hospital of Rio de Janeiro during 2007, and an interview was used to collect data. Fifteen companions, mainly patients' mothers, joined the study. Data analysis showed three main cathegories: impression of the surgical center; feelings of the companions regarding the child's operation; and companion's perceptions about nursing care during intraoperative period. Feelings of fear, preoccupation, anxiety, nervousness and hope for successful outcomes were highlighted. It is important to offer preoperative support and orientation to children's companions in order to favor comfort, confidence and security.

La investigación se realizó en un hospital universitario, en la ciudad de Rio de Janeiro-Brasil, en 2007. La recogida de datos incluyó las entrevistas. Participaron del estudio 15 acompañantes, destacándose las madres. Del análisis de los datos surgieron tres categorías: impresión sobre el ambiente del centro quirúrgico; sentimiento de los acompañantes con relación a la cirugía del niño; percepción de los acompañantes sobre la tensión de enfermería en el período transoperatorio. Se resaltaron los sentimientos de miedo, preocupación, ansiedad y nervosismo frente al acto quirúrgico en perjuicio de sentimientos positivos y de esperanza en resultados exitosos. Se debe ofrecer amparo y orientación prequirúrgica a los acompañantes para lograr que sientan confort, confianza y seguridad.Trata-se de um estudo descritivo com abordagem qualitativa, com o objetivo de identificar os sentimentos mais vividos por acompanhantes de crianças no perioperatório, oferecer-lhes acolhida terapêutica e avaliar a assistência prestada no transoperatório, segundo a percepção desses familiares. A pesquisa ocorreu em um hospital universitário, no município do Rio de Janeiro, em 2007. A coleta de dados foi realizada mediante entrevista. Participaram do estudo 15 acompanhantes, destacando-se as mães. Da análise dos dados emergiram três categorias: impressão sobre o ambiente do centro cirúrgico; sentimento dos acompanhantes em relação à operação da criança; percepção dos acompanhantes quanto à assistência de enfermagem prestada no período do transoperatório. Ressaltaram-se os sentimentos de medo, preocupação, ansiedade e nervosismo diante do ato cirúrgico em detrimento de sentimentos positivos e de esperança em resultados exitosos.
