Perception of residents of a city in the state of Minas Gerais on male nurses

Resumo: This exploratory qualitative research aims at investigating the perception of Itajubá neighbours on male nurses; identifying the nurses' perception on that community view; identifying the population feelings and perceptions on being cared for by this nursing professional. The research was approved by the Wenceslau Braz Nursing School Research Ethics Committee. The sample consisted of 40 participants, selected through purposive sampling method, and representatives of different population segments. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews recorded and transcribed verbatim. Theoretical and methodological framework was the Social Representation Theory; Collective Subject Discourse was applied for the selection of central ideas and corresponding key expressions from which the subjects' discourse was extracted. The perceptions, views and experiences of the population were diverse and based on gender differences, prejudice, and the wish to succeed in the nursing career. Data reveals that a broad discussion on the subject, led to society as a whole and the nursing professional in particular, is needed.

Data reveals that a broad discussion on the subject, led to society as a whole and the nursing professional in particular, is needed.Este estudio, de enfoque cualitativo, exploratorio, descriptivo y transversal, tiene como objetivo conocer la percepción de la comunidad, representantes de los diferentes sectores de la ciudad de Itajubá, Minas Gerais, sobre los enfermeros varones. Busca, además, identificar dicha percepción en cuanto a visión de la comunidad acerca de estos profesionales y conocer la experiencia, entre sus percepciones y sentimientos, al ser cuidados por los enfermeros. El estudio fue aprobado por el Comité de Ética en Investigación de la "Escola de Enfermagem Wenceslau Braz". La muestra consistió en 40 participantes, miembros de la comunidad. El muestreo fue tipo intencional. La recogida de datos se llevó a cabo a través de entrevistas semi-estructuradas, grabadas y transcritas textualmente, de febrero a agosto de 2011. El estudio tuvo como marco teórico y metodológico la Teoría de las Representaciones Sociales y siguió las directrices del Discurso del Sujeto Colectivo para seleccionar las ideas centrales y sus correspondientes expresiones clave, de las cuales fueron extraídas los discursos de los sujetos. Las percepciones, opiniones y experiencias de los habitantes sobre este profesional fueron distintas y estuvieron impregnadas de relaciones de diferencias entre géneros, prejuicios y conquista de espacio en enfermería. Los datos reflejan la importancia del tema y su necesidad de que sea debatido entre la sociedad y los profesionales de enfermería.Neste estudo, de abordagem qualitativa, exploratória, descritiva e transversal, objetivou-se conhecer a percepção dos moradores, representantes dos diversos segmentos da cidade de Itajubá-MG, sobre o profissional de enfermagem do gênero masculino; identificar a percepção deles em relação à visão da comunidade itajubense sobre esse profissional; e conhecer a experiência, entre as percepções e sentimentos deles, ao serem cuidados por esse profissional. A pesquisa foi aprovada pelo Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa da Escola de Enfermagem Wenceslau Braz. A amostra foi constituída de 40 participantes, membros dessa comunidade. A amostragem foi do tipo proposital. A coleta de dados foi realizada mediante entrevista semiestruturada, gravada e transcrita literalmente, de fevereiro a agosto de 2011. O estudo teve como referencial teórico-metodológico a Teoria das Representações Sociais e seguiu as diretrizes do Discurso do Sujeito Coletivo para a seleção das ideias centrais e expressões-chave, por meio das quais foram extraídos os discursos dos sujeitos. As percepções, visões e experiências de moradores para com esse profissional foram diversificadas e permeadas pelas relações de diferenças entre gêneros, preconceito e conquista de espaço na enfermagem.
