Socio-demographic and clinical profile of patients treated in an outpatient palliative chemotherapy clinic in Belo Horizonte

Resumo: This study aimed at identifying the socio-demographic and clinical profile of patients treated in an outpatient palliative chemotherapy unit in Belo Horizonte. It is a descriptive study using a quantitative approach. Data were collected through interviews with 70 patients who underwent palliative chemotherapy between October 2010 and February 2011. Data were entered into the SPSS program and analysed using descriptive statistics. The study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee under report nº. 0388.0.203.000-10 from 15/09/2010. The research subjects gave their informed consent to participation in the research. The subjects were mostly female; their average age was 56 years, with a low education level, and a low income. The main primary sites of cancer were: breast (n = 31; 44.3%), and gastrointestinal tract (n = 21; 30%). The majority had only one metastasis (61.4%), the main organs affected were liver, bone and lungs. 70% of the sample presented a stable functional capacity. As to the occurrence of symptoms, all areas had a low to moderate scoring. The occurrence of symptoms score showed an overall median age of 16.50 (M = 17.09; SD = 10.05). The intensity of stress-related symptoms score obtained median of 5.5 (M = 8.91, SD = 9.07). The experience of symptoms had a median score of 23.5 points (M = 26, SD = 17.96). The predominant profile was patients with good functional capacity and relatively good ADL index score. A small percentage of patients presented their functional capacity affected, and they would benefit greatly from palliative home care.

Se trata de un estudio descriptivo con enfoque cuantitativo. Se entrevistaron a 70 pacientes sometidos a quimioterapia paliativa entre octubre de 2010 y febrero 2011. Los datos fueron introducidos en el SPSS y analizados mediante estadística descriptiva. El estudio fueaprobado por el Comité Ético de Investigación bajo el N º 0388.0.203.000-10 15/09/2010 y los sujetos consintieron formalmente en participar. Los resultados indican que predominan mujeres, edad promedio de 56 años, bajo nivel de ingresos y de educación. Principales sitios primarios de cáncer: mama (n = 31, 44,3%) y tracto gastrointestinal (n = 21; 30%). La mayoría presentaba una sola metástasis (61,4%), los principales órganos afectados eran hígado, huesos y pulmones. 70% de la muestra presentó capacidad funcional estable. Todas las áreas mostraron entre baja y moderada puntuación para la aparición de síntomas. El escore de incidencia de síntomas mostró promedio general de 16,50 (M = 17,09, SD = 10.05). El escorede intensidad de síntomas asociados al estrés obtuvo promediode 5,5 (M = 8,91, SD = 9,07). La experiencia de síntomas fue promedio 23,5 puntos (M = 26, SD = 17.96). Llegamos a la conclusión que el perfil predominante fue de pacientes con una buena capacidad funcional y condiciones relativamente buenas para desarrollar sus actividades de vida diarias. Un pequeño porcentaje de pacientes con capacidad funcional afectada se beneficiarían mucho con cuidados paliativos domiciliarios.O objetivo com esta pesquisa foi identificar o perfil sociodemográfico e clínico dos pacientes atendidos em um serviço ambulatorial de quimioterapia paliativa em Belo Horizonte. Trata-se de estudo descritivo, com abordagem quantitativa. Foram entrevistados 70 pacientes submetidos a quimioterapia paliativa entre os meses de outubro de 2010 a fevereiro de 2011. Os dados foram inseridos no Programa SPSS e analisados utilizando-se estatística descritiva. O estudo foi aprovado pelo Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa sob o nº 0388.0.203.000-10, de 15/9/2010, e os sujeitos consentiram formalmente em participar. A população, em sua maioria, constituiu-se do sexo feminino, com média de 56 anos de idade, baixo nível de escolaridade e de renda. Os principais sítios primários do câncer foram: mama (n=31; 44,3%) e trato gastrintestinal (n= 21; 30%). A maioria apresentava apenas uma metástase (61,4%, cujos principais órgãos acometidos foram fígado, ossos e pulmões, e 70% da amostra encontrava-se na faixa considerada de capacidade funcional estável. Quanto à ocorrência de sintomas, todos os domínios apresentaram de baixa a moderada pontuação. O escore de ocorrência de sintomas apresentou a mediana geral de 16,50 (M= 17,09; DP=10,05). Para o escore de intensidade do estresse relacionado aos sintomas, obteve-se a mediana de 5,5 (M=8,91; DP=9,07). A experiência de sintomas obteve a mediana de 23,5 pontos (M= 26; DP= 17,96). O perfil predominante foi o de pacientes com boa capacidade funcional e com condições de desenvolver relativamente bem suas atividades de vida diária (AVDs).
