Health education practices for elderly caregivers: a look at nursing from Paulo Freire's perspective

Resumo: | The increase in chronic non-communicable diseases rate, which is the main cause of disabilities and dependencies, is consequence of an aging population. In this context, elderly caregivers are of the upmost importance. To be able to provide better care they need to be advised and guided through educational activities. It is the health professionals’ responsibility, especially the nurses’, to implement such activities. This study aims at reflecting on the nurses’ health education practices directed to elderly caregivers using Paulo Freire’s problematizing and liberating perspective. Often the education imparted is disconnected from that population’s context. When developing their educational practices the professionals must transmit confidence, and through a humanized approach, be able to captivate caregivers, establishing a clear and constructive dialogue between teacher and student. The theory of Paulo Freire values the respect for both the common sense, and the student’s creative capacity; it defends and encourages the naive curiosity that is changed into question that leads to epistemological curiosity that turns into critical reflection, generating a critical consciousness. So the individual is capable of understanding, analysing and confronting his/her given reality, and change it. The nurses’ assimilation of Freire’s ideas can offer elderly caregivers awareness, a critical thinking, and consequently improve their performances. |

Por ello se destacan los cuidadores de ancianos que necesitan orientación y asistencia para ejercer su trabajo. Les corresponde a los profesionales de salud, especialmente a los enfermeros, implementar dichas prácticas. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo reflexionar sobre las prácticas de Educación en Salud realizadas por enfermeros con cuidadores de ancianos desde la perspectiva liberadora de Paulo Freire. La educación a menudo está desvinculada de la realidad en la que se inserta esta población. En el desarrollo de las prácticas educativas los profesionales deben transmitir confianza, para que, dentro de un prisma humanizado, conquisten a los cuidadores y que haya diálogo franco y constructivo entre profesores y alumnos. La pedagogía de Paulo Freire valora el respeto al sentido común y a la capacidad creativa del estudiante cuya curiosidad ingenua se transforma en pregunta y conlleva a la problematización de la realidad. Ello resulta en la curiosidad epistemológica y, a su vez, en reflexión y en conciencia crítica. Con esta superación, el individuo es capaz de entender, analizar y confrontar la realidad en la que está insertado, transformándola. La incorporación de las ideas de Freire, especialmente por enfermeros, puede concientizar a los cuidadores de ancianos y desarrollar en ellos reflexión crítica para desempeñar mejor sus tareas.Diante do envelhecimento populacional que ocorre no Brasil, é possível observar o aumento das doenças crônicas não transmissíveis, as maiores responsáveis por incapacidades e dependências, passando a ter destaque os cuidadores de idosos que, para exercerem o cuidado, necessitam ser orientados e acompanhados por meio de atividades educativas. Cabe aos profissionais de saúde, sobretudo aos enfermeiros, a execução dessas práticas. Com este trabalho, objetiva-se refletir sobre as práticas de Educação em Saúde realizadas pelos enfermeiros com os cuidadores de idosos, na perspectiva problematizadora e libertadora de Paulo Freire. Muitas vezes a educação desenvolvida é realizada desconectada da realidade na qual se encontra inserida essa população. No desenvolvimento das práticas educativas, os profissionais devem passar confiança para que, sob um prisma humanizado, possam conquistar os cuidadores e, assim, ocorrer um diálogo claro e construtivo entre educador-educando. A teoria freireana preza pelo respeito, tanto do senso comum como da capacidade criadora do educando, por meio da defesa e incentivo da curiosidade ingênua, que se transforma em pergunta, que leva à problematização da realidade. Isso resulta na curiosidade epistemológica e, consequentemente, na reflexão crítica, e assim a consciência se criticiza. Com a ocorrência dessa superação, o indivíduo é capaz de entender, analisar e enfrentar a realidade na qual está inserido, transformando-a.
