Cinema serving the nazi political culture

The present article analyses the influence of cinema on the consolidation of Germany’s national-socialism by a brief historical rescue of Nazism and study of the movies Triumph of the Will (1935, directed by Leni Riefenstahl) and Jud Süss (1940, directed by Veit Harlan). Both pieces received the support of Hitler’s government on their production. They present fundamental items of the Third Reich’s ideology, such as the cultic myth of the “savior leader” (which is notable in Triumph of the Will) and the promotion of national identity based on the common enemy of Aryan people (which is made in a subtle way in Jud Süss). These films illustrate the important roles that the use of cinema and advertising techniques played in manipulating people, helping to consolidate Nazism into the hegemonic political culture in Germany at that time, a culture capable of perpetrating the Holocaust, one of the biggest atrocities ever seen by humanity.
