30 years of the antimanicomial struggle: a symbolic dispute

Resumo: Madness has always been closely related to social exclusion and violence. Ironically, the "century of enlightenment" brought obscurantism to the treatment of the insane, who became a mere object of study of the emerging sciences, segregated and violated in asylum-manicomial institutions. This treatment of madness, adopted as a paradigm for centuries, contributed to building in the popular imagination an understanding of the person in psychological distress as a subject without dignity. In this scenario, the Antimanicomial Struggle represents an insurgency against this segregationist vision that reproduces the symbolic violence imposed on forms of life considered "abnormal". Its challenge goes beyond the modification of laws and implies, above all, the deconstruction of a discursive barrier that prevents the recognition of the "insane" as a person and respect for their dignity.

El “siglo de las luces” trajo, ironicamente, el obscurantismo para el tratamiento del loco, convertido en objeto de estudio las ciencias emergentes, segregado y violentado en instituciones asilares manicomiales. Ese tratamiento de la locura, adoptado como paradigma durante siglos, contribuyó com la construcción, en el imaginário popular, una compehensión de la persona en sufrimiento psíquico como alguién sin dignidad. En este escenario, la lucha antimanicomial representa una insurgencia contra esa visión segregacionista que reproduce la violência simbólica infligida a formas de vida consideradas “anormales”. Su reto va allá de la modificación de leyes y tiene que ver, sobre todo, con la desconstrución de una barrera discursiva que impide el reconocimiento del “loco” como persona y el respeto a su dignidad.A loucura esteve sempre intimamente relacionada à exclusão social e à violência. O “século das luzes” trouxe, ironicamente, o obscurantismo para o tratamento do louco, tornado mero objeto de estudo das ciências emergentes, segregado e violentado em instituições asilares-manicomiais. Esse tratamento dado à loucura, adotado como paradigma durante séculos, contribuiu para construir no imaginário popular uma compreensão da pessoa em sofrimento psíquico como um sujeito sem dignidade. Nesse cenário, a Luta Antimanicomial representa uma insurgência, contra essa visão segregacionista que reproduz a violência simbólica impingida a formas de vida consideradas “anormais”.
