Conformism, crisis and populism: the collapse of contemporary democracy from Chantal Mouffe's agonistic perspective

Resumo: This paper aims to analyze the current global crisis in democracy through Chantal Mouffe’s agonistic point of view. First, it presents not just the belgian thinker's critique of the deliberative democratic model but also the fundamentals of the alternative model that she proposes. The idea is to oppose Mouffe's reflections about the dimensions of the "political" and the role of passions to dogmatic visions about the political polarization. Then, it examines the left-populism, a political strategy proposed by Mouffe in front of the political moment. This kind of populism, unlike the authoritarian and ultranationalist one that rises today, does not adopt a conception of people that excludes some social groups. Preserving a rhetorical ethics, it aims to expand the democratic project and to break with the neoliberal order. In sequence, the discussion follows the national scope. In order to evaluate Mouffe's diagnostic, it resumes the political events that led to the brazilian crisis and to Bolsonaro's victory in 2018.

En un primer momento, se presenta tanto la crítica de la pensadora belga al modelo de democracia deliberativa como los fundamentos del modelo alternativo defendido por ella. Con esto, se busca contraponer las reflexiones de Mouffe sobre las dimensiones de lo "político" y el papel de las "pasiones" a las visiones dogmáticas sobre la polarización política. A continuación, comenzamos con un examen del “populismo de izquierda”, estrategia política propuesta por el autor frente al momento político actual. Este tipo de populismo, a diferencia del de carácter autoritario y ultranacionalista que está en auge, no adopta una concepción excluyente del pueblo. Velando por una ética retórica, su principal objetivo es profundizar el proyecto democrático y romper con el orden neoliberal. Más adelante, la discusión se lleva a nivel nacional. Con el objetivo de poner a prueba el diagnóstico de Mouffe, se retoman los eventos políticos que culminaron en la actual crisis política brasileña y en la llegada de Jair Bolsonaro al poder.O presente artigo pretende analisar a atual crise democrática global com base na perspectiva agonística de Chantal Mouffe. Em um primeiro momento, apresenta-se tanto a crítica da pensadora belga ao modelo de democracia deliberativa quanto os fundamentos do modelo alternativo defendido por ela. Busca-se, com isso, contrapor as reflexões de Mouffe a respeito das dimensões do "político" e do papel das “paixões” às visões dogmáticas sobre a polarização política. Parte-se, então, para um exame acerca do “populismo de esquerda”, estratégia política proposta pela autora em face do atual momento político. Este tipo de populismo, ao contrário daquele de cunho autoritário e ultranacionalista que se encontra em alta, não adota uma concepção excludente de povo. Zelando por uma ética retórica, tem como principal objetivo o aprofundamento do projeto democrático e o rompimento com a ordem neoliberal. Mais adiante, a discussão é trazida para o âmbito nacional.
