The Witch and the Maestro: the musical collaboration between Carlos Barbosa-Lima and Tom Jobim

Resumo: The aim of this article is to describe the milestones in the relationship between guitarist Carlos Barbosa-Lima and composer Antonio Carlos Jobim. Over more than a decade, the two cultivated a fruitful musical collaboration fueled by mutual admiration. Starting with their joint work on solo guitar arrangements of Jobim's songs, a friendship was established and it had positive impacts on both of their trajectories: through Barbosa-Lima's hands, Jobim was definitively incorporated into the classical guitar repertoire, and through Jobim, Barbosa-Lima gained greater visibility among jazz and popular music audiences, including in Brazil. From this collaboration emerged the project to compose a "Concerto for guitar and orchestra," which, although not realized, demonstrates how stimulating the connection between the guitar brujo and the Sovereign Maestro was.

Durante más de una década, los dos cultivaron una fructífera colaboración musical impulsada por la admiración mutua. A partir del trabajo conjunto en los arreglos para guitarra solista de las canciones de Jobim, se estableció una amistad que repercutió positivamente en sus carreras: de la mano de Barbosa-Lima, Jobim se incorporó definitivamente al repertorio de guitarra de concierto; A través de Jobim, Barbosa-Lima logró mayor protagonismo entre el público del jazz y la música popular, incluso en Brasil. De esta cooperación surgió el proyecto de componer un “Concierto para guitarra y orquesta” que, aunque no completado, muestra cuán estimulante fue la conexión entre el brujo de la guitarra y el Maestro soberano.O objetivo do artigo é descrever os principais marcos da relação entre o violonista Carlos Barbosa-Lima e o compositor Antonio Carlos Jobim. Ao longo de mais de uma década os dois cultivaram uma profícua colaboração musical alimentada pela mútua admiração. A partir do trabalho conjunto em torno dos arranjos para violão solo das músicas de Jobim, estabeleceu-se uma amizade que teve reflexos positivos sobre a trajetória de ambos: pelas mãos de Barbosa-Lima, Jobim foi definitivamente incorporado ao repertório do violão de concerto; por meio de Jobim, Barbosa-Lima obteve maior projeção entre o público de jazz e música popular, inclusive no Brasil.
