Life-cycle productivity and gender differences in academic research: evidence from a Brazilian public university

Resumo: Personal attributes and behavioral factorsare key factors in determining researchers’scientifi c productivity. Investigating whatdetermines the academic productivity amonguniversity researchers is the purpose of thisstudy, which uses a sample of microdata fromprofessors at a public university in Brazil (FederalUniversity of Juiz de Fora) for the period1999-2013. The main results show that ageand academic productivity have an inverted-U-shaped relationship, revealing that experienceenhances academic production. Regardinggender differences, we found that womengenerally have lower average productivitythan men. However, at the end of their careers,women are subject to greater leverageeffects in productivity and therefore achieveproductive parity with men, especially duringtheir production peaks.

Investigar qué determina la productividad académica entre los investigadores universitarios es el objetivo de este estudio, que utiliza una muestra de microdatos de profesores de una universidad estatal en Brasil (Universidad Federal de Juiz de Fora) para el período 1999-2013. Los principales resultados muestran que la edad y la productividad académica tienen una relación en forma de U invertida y revelan que la experiencia potencia la producción académica. En cuanto a las diferencias de género, encontramos que en general las mujeres tienen una productividad promedio más baja que los hombres. Sin embargo, al final de sus carreras, las mujeres están sujetas a mayores efectos de apalancamiento en la productividad y por lo tanto logran la paridad productiva con los hombres, especialmente durante sus picos de producción.Atributos pessoais e fatores comportamentais sãofatores-chave na determinação da produtividadecientífica dos pesquisadores.
