The value of interaction in the acquisition of a sign language

Resumo: The acquisition of a signed language as a first language is a subject that matters to researchers from different fields of study. It is significant in the acquisition of Deaf children of Deaf parents and even more when related to Deaf children of hearing parents. These last, usually have late access to a language like Libras. This study describes a test made with a pair of Deaf twins and three other kids. The twins have hearing parents and had their first contact with Libras at 5 years of age. Less than three years after, their performance in the language was comparable to a Deaf kid of Deaf parents. Although it is not conclusive, this study tries to show the value of a continuous interlocutor and a genuine communicative interaction in the acquisition of a sign language – as it happens to Deaf twins.
