The relationship between music and identity has become an important question for the field of music therapy. Music can strengthen people in their cultural context and create memories about significant events intensifying the potentiality for a therapeutic work, helping to construct the identity and contributing to the patients quality of life. The comprehension of the musical culture and of the meaning of music for the individual has been found to be essential for the therapist to establish the relationship with the patient. The purpose of this study is to evaluate how patients with multiple sclerosis express their personal, social, temporal and transpersonal identities through the music. Eight adult patients under treatment in the [Center of Investigation in Multiple Sclerosis] Centro de Investigação em Esclerose Múltipla (CIEM) UFMG were selected. The work has been characterized as descriptive using the qualitative method and its analyses were submitted to quantitative treatment. The patients were first considered through a music therapy evaluation protocol. After that, the patients were asked to select 10 to 15 significant musics in their lives. These musics were recorded on a CD. Based on this CD, the patients passed through an open interview that was recorded and later transcribed and analysed.
