Resumo: The objective of this study was to analyze the epidemiological profile of oral health of Sateré-Mawé indigenous people living in Barreirinha, Amazonas (AM), Brazil, and the Tikuna indigenous people living in the urban area of Manaus (AM), in addition to characterizing the need for endodontic treatment between the two ethnic groups. A total of 138 individuals participated in the study, of whom 98 were Tikuna and 40 were Sateré-Mawé; they were distributed in age groups ranging from seven to 75 years. A very high prevalence of caries was observed in both ethnic groups. For the Sateré-Mawé in the 7–12 age group, the decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) index presented a mean value of 3.17. Comparing the DMFT index and the need for endodontic treatment in each of the ethnicities, these variables were found to be correlated, because as the DMFT index increases, the chances of needing endodontic treatment increase. The Sateré-Mawé presented a higher prevalence of need for endodontic treatment compared to the Tikuna. The association of comorbidities and the need for endodontic treatment were demonstrated only in the Tikuna, and there was only a correlation of this necessity with the presence of diabetes mellitus (DM) in one case. The need to expand access to oral health in these communities is emphasized, taking into account geographical access and technological, environmental, linguistic, and cultural barriers.

Participaram do estudo 138 indivíduos, sendo 98 Tikuna e 40 Sateré-Mawé; eles foram distribuídos em faixas etárias variando de sete a 75 anos. Uma prevalência muito alta de cárie foi observada em ambos os grupos étnicos. Para os Sateré-Mawé na faixa etária de 7 a 12 anos, o índice de dentes cariados, perdidos e obturados (CPOD) apresentou valor médio de 3,17. Comparando o índice CPOD e a necessidade de tratamento endodôntico em cada uma das etnias, verificou-se que essas variáveis estão correlacionadas, pois conforme o índice CPOD aumenta, aumentam as chances de necessidade de tratamento endodôntico. Os Sateré-Mawé apresentaram maior prevalência de necessidade de tratamento endodôntico em relação aos Tikuna. A associação de comorbidades e a necessidade de tratamento endodôntico foram demonstradas apenas nos Tikuna, havendo correlação dessa necessidade com a presença de diabetes mellitus (DM) em apenas um caso. Ressalta-se a necessidade de ampliar o acesso à saúde bucal nessas comunidades, considerando o acesso geográfico e as barreiras tecnológicas, ambientais, linguísticas e culturais.CNPq - Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e TecnológicoFAPEMIG - Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de Minas GeraisCAPES - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível SuperiorengUniversidade Federal de Minas GeraisUFMGBrasilFAO - DEPARTAMENTO DE ODONTOLOGIA RESTAURADORAICB - DEPARTAMENTO DE BIOQUÍMICA E IMUNOLOGIABrazilian Oral ResearchSaúde bucalSaúde públicaPesquisa sobre serviços de saúdeOral healthPublic healthHealth services researchEpidemiological analysis and need for endodontic treatment among the indigenous Sateré-Mawé and TikunaAnálise epidemiológica e necessidade de tratamento endodôntico entre os indígenas Sateré-Mawé e Tikunainfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/articlehttps://www.scielo.br/j/bor/a/Dj8gShWpQzbvBQT8yvYbqbK/?lang=enNely Cristina Medeiros CairesLuciana Carla Neves de BritoLeda Quercia VieiraAntônio Paulino Ribeiro Sobrinhoapplication/pdfinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessreponame:Repositório Institucional da UFMGinstname:Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG)instacron:UFMGLICENSELicense.txtLicense.txttext/plain;
