São muitas as imagens atribuídas à Manaus, capital do estado do Amazonas, ao longo dos tempos. Entretanto, esse universo de imaginários não se restringe à dimensão intangível, mas manifesta-se continuamente na produção do espaço e reflete-se no campo do patrimônio cultural. No caso do Centro da cidade, recentemente inscrito nos Livros do Tombo Arqueológico, Etnográfico e Paisagístico e Tombo Histórico pelo Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional (IPHAN), seu processo de formação está diretamente associado à chamada Belle Époque Amazônica, momento de renovação urbana promovida pela ascensão da economia de extração e exportação da borracha na região, entre o fim do século XIX e início do século XX. A herança desse período para a capital amazonense, para além da arquitetura eclética, carrega transformações que impactam consideravelmente na percepção e relação com a paisagem. Nesse sentido, a pesquisa discute os modos de olhar acerca do patrimônio edificado da Belle Époque Amazônica, no Centro de Manaus, por meio de um estudo iconográfico e iconológico, à medida em que entendemos as imagens como mais do que registros de um determinado espaço no tempo, mas como limiar de produção e reprodução de imaginários. Para tanto, propôs-se a interpretação de fontes iconográficas que representem a Manaus da Belle Époque e seu legado, tendo como base coletâneas de fotografias e cartões-postais consultadas nos acervos do Museu de Imagem e do Som do Amazonas (MISAM) e Arquivo Público de Manaus. Assim, foi possível apreender os campos de disputas e ideais de modernidade presentes no processo de consolidação do espaço como bem de valor cultural, partindo do pressuposto de que mesmo em caso de imagens consideradas ilusórias ou que não correspondem à totalidade do que se entende por realidade, deve ser reconhecida a influência que se manifesta ao decorrer do tempo no imaginário sobre o centro da cidade e nos valores atribuídos aos bens edificados do sítio tombado."Green Hell". “Paris of the tropics”. “Showcase city”. There are many images attributed to Manaus, capital of Amazonas in Brazil, over time. However, this universe of imaginaries is not restricted to intangible dimension, but is continuously manifested in production of space and is reflected in the field of cultural heritage. In the case of Historic City Centre, recently inscribed in the Books of Archaeological, Ethnographic and Landscape Tombo and Historic Tombo by National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (IPHAN), its formation process is directly associated with the so-called Amazonian Belle Époque, a moment of urban renewal that was developed by the rise of rubber export economy in the region, between the end of 19th century and the beginning of 20th century. The legacy of that period for the capital of Amazonas, in addition to the eclectic architecture, carries a considerable impact on the perception and relationship with the landscape. In that regard, this research discusses ways of looking at the built heritage of the Amazonian Belle Époque, in Manaus’s Center, through an iconographic and iconological study, as we understand the images as more than records of a certain space in time, but as a threshold of production and reproduction of imaginaries. Therefore, an interpretation of iconographic sources that represent Manaus of Belle Époque and its legacy was proposed, based on photographs and cards consulted in the collections of the Museum of Image and Sound of Amazonas (MISAM) and Public Archive of Manaus.
