Resumo: A biologically relevant natural pigment, 1,6-dihydroxy-3-methyl-9,10-anthraquinone 1, widely produced by fungus from Phoma genus, has been isolated from Cassia sophera Linn. (Caesalpiniaceae) roots and subjected to detailed spectral studies, including 1D- and 2D-NMR. The compound 1 inhibits the proliferation of several cancer cell lines at different extents, showing minor effects on the growth of non-tumorogenic keratinocyte cells.
