The use of implants in oral rehabilitation is a reality in dentistry. Much has evolved in this area, however, there are clinical situations that still require special attention when the indication and performance of treatments through osseointegrated implants. One of these situations is the amount of vertical bone deficiency in the posterior maxilla. Through a literature review of the past 15 years using the database of PubMed , we observed that there are many techniques to solve this situation by inserting biomaterials inside the maxillary sinus with the intention of bone formation. The most common are the simultaneous use of implants at the maxillary sinus lift surgery or after the healing of the previous procedure. Several materials are used in this procedure, autogenous, allogenic, xenogenous or alloplastic bone. All materials provided good clinical results, with success rates between 90% and 100%. There was no consensus as to the best material to be used. The main complications reported were transient sinusitis, transient hypoesthesia, sinus mucosa perforation, wound dehiscence and implant loss.
