Resumo: Bovine immunodeficiency virus is the causative agent of bovine viral immunodeficiency that is known to infect cattle worldwide. As with other retrovirus infections, the hosts develop a long-term infection and most infected animals remain asymptomatic. The present study was to detect BIV proviral DNA in bovine blood objective and estimate the occurrence of infection in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Blood samples from 391 cattle were collected from two regions of the state, Zona da Mata and Central. Proviral DNA was detected by semi-nested polymerase chain reaction (SN-PCR). SN-PCR results indicate a 12.5% ​​BIV occurrence in the state. The amplified products were as BIV by sequencing and the nucleotide sequence similarity with the confirmed reference strain (R-29) was 99%. This is the first study reporting the presence of BIV in Minas Gerais, Brazil. The results indicate the need to carry out a detailed study on the prevalence of BIV occurrence in Brazil.
