The study was carried out with the objective of characterizing and diagnosing as carpentry companies in the city of Montes Claros - MG. As a study object, 15 carpenters of the city were delimited, as well as carpentry in the condition of informality. We conducted structured interviews with a questionnaire application to obtain information on the markets produced, number of employees, raw material used, waste disposal, marketing, machinery and equipment used. It was verified that, as average carpenters, 5.3 employees and are classified as micro and small companies according to SEBRAE (2006), they produce the furniture for custom houses and the main raw material used in MDF obtained from the City's timber companies. The main problems were found in the commercialization of business operations with informative companies, resulting in loss of customers and low commercial value of the products, both observed in 26.7% of the joineries. With regard to wood residues and derived panels, 33.3% of the lumber companies studied burned open-air waste and 46.7% discarded this waste in urban waste. As the main machines that use circular, drill, sander and emery. Concerning safety equipment, it was found that in only 40% of the business owners employees carried these equipments. The carpenters are unmotivated in investing in the sector, main place and great competition between companies.
