Busca-se, a partir disso, relacionar a esfera esportiva com as transformações mais amplas que ocorriam no país ao longo do período que condiz com a vigência da Primeira República. Para tanto, foram utilizados documentos e periódicos datados entre 1905 e 1930. As fontes foram coletadas no acervo da Biblioteca Nacional do Rio de Janeiro através da Hemeroteca Digital Brasileira. Ao todo foram analisadas 2.094 ocorrências sobre o esporte no interior das instituições de ensino superior no país no recorte temporal proposto pela pesquisa. Os documentos e fontes são provenientes de vários estados brasileiros, dentre eles Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Santa Catarina, Pernambuco, Pará, Rio Grande do Sul e Paraná. Como perspectiva teórica partimos das discussões sobre a História Cultural e a Teoria do Associativismo. Com relação aos resultados da pesquisa, concluímos que o associativismo foi o principal fator que contribuiu para a sistematização do fenômeno esportivo nas escolas de ensino superior, nas três primeiras décadas do século XX. Além disso, os processos desencadeados pela modernidade (urbanização, industrialização, comercialização) impactaram o desenvolvimento do esporte acadêmico no país, mas cumpriram um papel secundário se comparado ao "capital associativo". O esporte acadêmico cumpriu um papel importante na difusão de práticas corporais como o futebol, o voleibol, o atletismo, o xadrez, o polo aquático, a esgrima e o basquetebol no Brasil. Por fim, diferente do que ocorreu com o esporte universitário a partir da década de 1930, o esporte acadêmico observado nas três primeiras décadas do século XX, não sofreu uma interferência direta do Estado, seja do poder executivo ou das instâncias legislativas, o que reafirma a importância do associativismo civil para analisarmos a emergência histórica deste fenômeno cultural.The aim of this research is to elaborate a historical analysis of how the development of the sporting phenomenon occurred within the institutions of higher education in Brazil from 1905 to 1930. Based on this, we seek to relate the sports sphere with the broader transformations that occurred in the country during the period that corresponds to the validity of the Primeira República. For that, documents and periodicals dated between 1905 and 1930 were used. The sources were collected in the collection of the Biblioteca Nacional do Rio de Janeiro through the Hemeroteca Digital Brasileira. In all, 2,094 occurrences about sport were analyzed within higher education institutions in the country in the time frame proposed by the research. The documents and sources come from several Brazilian states, including Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Santa Catarina, Pernambuco, Pará, Rio Grande do Sul and Paraná. As a theoretical perspective, we start from discussions about Cultural History and Theory of Associativism. Regarding the research results, we conclude that associativism was the main factor that contributed to the systematization of the sports phenomenon in higher education schools in the first three decades of the twentieth century. In addition, the processes triggered by modernity (urbanization, industrialization, commercialization) impacted the development of academic sport in the country, but played a secondary role when compared to "associative capital". Academic sport played an important role in the dissemination of bodily practices such as football, volleyball, athletics, chess, water polo, fencing and basketball in Brazil.
