Métodos: Estudo observacional analítico, transversal com amostra de idosos comunitários, realizada por conveniência. As concentrações de 25(OH)D foram pesquisadas por Enzyme Linked Fluorescent Assay (ELFA). Para determinar os níveis de vitamina D, seguiu-se os critérios da Sociedade Brasileira de Patologia Clínica/Medicina Laboratorial (SBPC/ML), sendo: 0-20 ng/ml como deficiência, 20-29 insuficiência e acima de 30 ng/ml como suficiência. A força de preensão palmar (FPP) e força isométrica quadríceps (FIQ) foram mensuradas por dinamômetro manual Jamar® e Lafayette® 01165, respectivamente. A capacidade funcional foi avaliada pelo Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB). Para FPP e FIQ, realizamos regressão linear múltipla e as variáveis com p<0,20 foram incluídas no modelo de regressão logística (α= 5%). Para O SPPB não houve associação entre a vitamina D, então realizou-se teste qui-quadrado de Pearson e teste de Kruskal Wallis para comparação entre as variáveis. Resultados: Participaram 150 idosos comunitários (67,18 ± 5,33) anos. O nível sérico de 25(OH)D foi classificado em: 60,7% como hipovitaminose D (48% insuficientes + 12,7% deficientes) e 39,3% suficientes. Não foram encontradas associações entre a hipovitaminose D com as variáveis estudadas FPP e FIQ (p=0,841 para FPP e p=0,462 para logFIQ). As variáveis sexo, idade, uso de suplementos e dor, apresentaram maior associação com a FPP, explicando 58,2% da sua variabilidade, enquanto idade, sexo, dor e praticar atividade física pelo menos 3 vezes por semana explicaram 25,5% da logFIQ. Quanto à capacidade funcional mensurada pelo SPPB apenas a variável idade (p=0,009) teve diferença estatística na comparação entre as variáveis desta amostra. Conclusão: Em uma amostra de idosos comunitários brasileiros a hipovitaminose D não foi associada com a diminuição da força muscular e capacidade funcional. Estudos longitudinais com mensuração de tempo de uso e dosagens da vitamina D devem ser incentivados.Objective: Explore the association among hypovitaminosis D, muscle strength and functional capacity in Brazilian community dwelling elderly. Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) evaluated the functional capacity. For FPP and FIQ, unvaried regression was performed, and variables of p<0,20 were included in the logistical regression model (α= 5%). For the SPPB, Pearson chi-square and Kruskal Wallis tests were held to compare the variables. Results: One hundred and fifty individuals from community dwelling elderly (aged 67,18 ± 5,33) participated in the study. The serum level of 25(OH)D of the participants was classified as follows: 60,7% as hypovitaminosis D (48% insufficient + 12,7% deficient) and 39,3% sufficient. No association between hypovitaminosis D and the considered variables (p = 0,841 for FPP; p = 0,462 for logFIQ and p = 0,617 for SPPB) was found. The variants gender, age, usage of nutritional supplements and analgesic presented major correlation with FPP, explained by 58,2% of its variability while the variables age, gender, pain and physical activity justified 25,5% of logFIQ. Regarding the functional capacity, only the aspect of age (p=0,009) showed a statistic difference in that sample. Conclusion: In a group of Brazilian community dwelling elderly, hypovitaminosis D was not associated with the decline of muscle strength and functional capacity.
