Após explicitar referências importantes para a fundação moderna desse campo (principalmente Friedrich August Wolf), abordamos os principais documentos publicados na época da polêmica em torno ao livro de estreia de Nietzsche e explicitamos alguns desdobramentos desse violento debate: a nosso ver, as críticas de Wilamowitz à abordagem filológica de Nietzsche, pejorativamente batizada de Zukunftsphilologie (filologia do futuro), bem como as que Rohde faz a Wilamowitz, referindo-se a uma Afterphilologie (filologia retrógrada), junto com as reflexões de Wagner e as do próprio Nietzsche, ainda podem dar a pensar sobre o potencial desse campo para uma ação crítica e criativa no presente.In order to revisit the reception of the first book by the young philologist Friedrich Nietzsche, The Birth of Tragedy from the Spirit of Music, published in 1872, we depart from some of the main issues at stake for the field of Altertumswissenschaft (Science of Antiquity) in the second half of the 19th century.
