Este setor é muito importante para a economia brasileira, representando, em 2015, cerca de 10,95% do PIB industrial (IBGE, 2017). Para compreendêlo de forma mais eficaz é feita uma análise do Sistema Setorial de Inovação, abordando o conhecimento e domínio tecnológico, atores e redes e legislação e políticas para alavancar o setor. Assim, a partir dos anos de 1990, mudanças setoriais significativas aconteceram, com a privatização das principais empresas e com o fortalecimento da China como parceiro comercial brasileiro. Em consequência disso, houve um enfraquecimento do setor de metalurgia, pela concorrência, e um impulso na mineração, pela demanda externa. O objetivo do trabalho é observar como as características da firma influenciam as interações com a universidade. Para alcança-lo, primeiramente, foi feita uma análise descritiva dos dados do Diretório dos Grupos Pesquisas (DGP) do CNPq e dos microdados da Relação Anual de Informações Sociais (RAIS), referentes aos anos de 2006 e 2016. Com isso, verificou-se que o perfil das interações das minero-metalúrgicas com as universidades foi de ter maior relacionamento com os grupos de engenharia, além de utilizarem mais frequentemente as formas de remuneração de transferência de recursos financeiros, insumos materiais e fornecimento de bolsas. Além disso, as minero-metalúrgicas estão contratando mais profissionais com mestrado e doutorado. Ao longo do tempo, as empresas passam a interagir mais com as universidades e aquelas que possuem funcionários com grau de escolaridade mais elevado são mais interativas. Posteriormente, é utilizada a metodologia de análise de correlação canônica para compreender a relação entre as características das empresas, como o grau de escolaridade de seus funcionários e o tamanho da firma, e os tipos de interação, assim como a magnitude e a representatividade dessas variáveis dentro desses grupos. Dessa forma, observa-se que os objetivos iniciais dos principais institutos de pesquisa estão sendo atingidos, pois estes tão contribuindo com mão de obra qualificada, pesquisa, aprimoramento e adaptação de tecnologias, projetos e o fomento do setor, como um todo. Então, a pesquisa de longo prazo passou a ser mais significativa, no decorrer do tempo, uma vez que houve um aumento da concorrência externa e as empresas são voltadas para exportação. Através disso, cria-se uma maior interdependência entre os grupos de variáveis, por haver a necessidade de mais funcionários qualificados, que consigam estabelecer um fluxo entre as empresas e seus parceiros.The present dissertation presents the mining-metallurgical sector, as well as its interaction with Brazilian universities. This sector is very important for the Brazilian economy, representing in 2015, about 10.95% of the industrial GDP (IBGE, 2017). To understand it more effectively, an analysis of the Sectorial System of Innovation is made; approaching the technological knowledge and realm, actors and networks, and legislation and policies to leverage the sector. Therefore, from the 1990s, significant sectoral changes happened, with the privatization of the main companies and the strengthening of China as a trading partner to Brazil. As a result, there was a decline in the metallurgy sector, due to competition, and a boost in the mining sector, due to external demand. The aim of this work is to observe how the firm characteristics have influence in the interactions with the university. In order to reach it, a descriptive analysis of the CNPq Research Group Directory (DGP) and the Annual Social Information Relation (RAIS) microdata was made, referring to the years 2006 and 2016. Consequently, it was verified that the profile of mining-metallurgical interactions with the universities was having a greater relationship with engineering groups, as well as the use of forms of remuneration of financial resources transference, material inputs and the supply of scholarships. Furthermore, the mining-metallurgists are hiring more professionals who have masters and doctorates. Over time, companies begin to interact more often with universities and those with a higher level of employee education are more interactive. Subsequently, the methodology of canonical correlation analysis is used to understand the relationship between the company’s characteristics, like the degree of education of its employees and the size of the firm, and the interaction types, as well as the magnitude and representativeness of these variables within these groups. In this way, it is observed that the initial objectives of the main research institutes are being reached, as they contribute to qualified workforce, research, improvement and adaptation of technologies, projects and the promotion of the sector as a whole. Then, the long-term research became more significant over time, once there was an increase in the external competition and the companies are export-oriented.
