Resumo: The present study aimed to analyze all aspects concerning mouthguards, since its efficacy, mechanisms of action, advantages and disadvantages, material used in its making, types, importance of its use in the prevention of dental trauma in addition to the special characteristics of protectors for orthodontic therapy. It was concluded that further studies are needed to improve its efficiency, but there are clear evidence that there is a dramatic reduction in both the incidence and severity of dental trauma and damage to its neighboring structures by using the mouthguard.
