New technologies powered by AI have been applied in different sectors of the economy and the educational context is no different. AI has been considered a key to the development of learning strategies, especially in distance education. In this sense, this research aimed to identify the current state of Brazilian literature on AI applied to distance education. The Higher Education market in Brazil, which is the biggest in Latin America regarding the number of individuals able to enroll in a program, is still developing and distance education has grown rapidly. To reach the purpose of this paper, it was performed a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) to find the research conducted in graduate programs that investigate the subject of AI applied to distance education. The final analysis used a total of 63 studies – 26 master’s theses and 37 doctoral dissertations. The main results show that most of the research on AI in distance education in Brazil was conducted in Computer Science (56%) and Engineering (27%). Only 6% of the studies reviewed are from masters’ or doctoral programs in Education. The result also shows that limited attention is paid to critical topics related to the growing introduction of AI in distance education, as such teachers’ employability and technological training or the ethical implications of using AI for the educational process. As a result of this SLR, it was possible to suggest research opportunities considering the international agenda on AI.engUniversidade Federal de Minas GeraisUFMGBrasilFAE - DEPARTAMENTO DE ADMINISTRAÇÃO ESCOLARFAE - DEPARTAMENTO DE MÉTODOS E TÉCNICAS DE ENSINOFAE - FACULDADE DE EDUCAÇÃOFCE - DEPARTAMENTO DE CIÊNCIAS CONTÁBEISProblems of Education in the 21st CenturyEnsino à distânciaInteligência ArtificialTecnologia educacionalArtificial intelligenceDistance educationEducational technologySystematic literature reviewArtificial intelligence in distance education: a systematic literature review of brazilian studiesinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/articlehttp://www.scientiasocialis.lt/pec/node/1583Samuel de Oliveira DursoEucidio Pimenta Arrudaapplication/pdfinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessreponame:Repositório Institucional da UFMGinstname:Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG)instacron:UFMGLICENSELicense.txtLicense.txttext/plain; charset=utf-82042https://repositorio.ufmg.br/bitstream/1843/60919/1/License.txtfa505098d172de0bc8864fc1287ffe22MD51ORIGINALARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN DISTANCE EDUCATION_ A SYSTEMATIC LITERATURE REVIEW OF BRAZILIAN STUDIES.pdfARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN DISTANCE EDUCATION_ A SYSTEMATIC LITERATURE REVIEW OF BRAZILIAN STUDIES.pdfapplication/pdf373686https://repositorio.ufmg.br/bitstream/1843/60919/2/ARTIFICIAL%20INTELLIGENCE%20IN%20DISTANCE%20EDUCATION_%20A%20SYSTEMATIC%20LITERATURE%20REVIEW%20OF%20BRAZILIAN%20STUDIES.pdff39d015bc5ca75fc08653b9c4a18b4f7MD521843/609192023-11-13 19:36:59.458oai:repositorio.ufmg.br:1843/60919Repositório InstitucionalPUBhttps://repositorio.ufmg.br/oaiopendoar:2023-11-13T22:36:59Repositório Institucional da UFMG - Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG)false
