Nas fontes consultadas por Caio César Boschi, foram localizados 61 compromissos, identificados em seu estudo Os leigos e o poder: irmandades leigas e política colonizadora em Minas Gerais, de 1986. A presente pesquisa vem acrescentar a esse acervo mais 104 compromissos, os quais se encontram distribuídos entre arquivos do Brasil e de Portugal, estando a maioria deles no estado de Minas Gerais. Os resultados obtidos descortinaram um relevante cenário de marcas d’água, nomes de fabricantes de papel, de comerciantes, de materiais da escrita, bem como de pigmentos utilizados para decorar esse rico patrimônio documental produzido por mãos ainda desconhecidas da historiografia. Ficou também constatado que a iconografia representada nesses compromissos foi ressignificada a partir dos impressos e manuais de caligrafia publicados na Europa, no século XVIII. Além disso, as fontes primárias revelaram que os boticários foram os “cozinheiros dos pintores”, dado que vem, de certa forma, ampliar a definição dada a esses profissionais pelo dicionarista francês radicado em Portugal, Rafael Bluteau, que os definiu como “cozinheiros dos médicos”. As abreviaturas e os símbolos químicos utilizados por médicos e cirurgiões para prescrever receitas médicas também foram do conhecimento desses boticários, que não atuaram de forma arbitrária, como referencia a literatura, mas sim com autoridade de conhecimento. Além de venderem pigmentos, eles também forneceram tintas para pessoas diversas, nas comarcas de Sabará e Ouro Preto. Pintores como Manoel da Costa Ataíde e Manoel Ribeiro Rosa foram seus clientes e um rol de materiais da pintura deste último foi encontrado em vales e pedidos consultados em campo. Os artífices responsáveis pela produção dos compromissos analisados nesta pesquisa utilizaram seda, couro, veludo, e linho para encaderná-los, e, para decorá-los, pigmentos como o vermelhão, azurita, malaquita (verde de cobre), folha de ouro e prata, latão, branco de chumbo, tinta da escrita à base de ferro, e várias outras de origem orgânica, como os amarelos e vermelhos.This text derives from a study on the materiality of handwritten engagements of religious brotherhoods produced in the captaincy of Minas Gerais between 1708 and 1815. In the sources consulted by Caio César Boschi, 61 engagements were found out and identified in his book Laymen and Power: Laic Brotherhoods and Colonization Policy in Minas Gerais, 1986.This research adds to this file 104 more engagements, kept in archives in Portugal and Brazil, most of them in the state of Minas Gerais. The results obtained unveiled a relevant set of watermarks, names of paper manufacturers, traders and writing materials, as well as pigments used to decorate a rich documental heritage produced by hands still unknown to historiography. It was also discovered that the iconography represented in those engagements was resignified since the printed matters and calligraphy handbooks published in Europe in the 18th century. Furthermore, the primary sources showed up that the apothecaries were “painters’s cooks”, which happens to broaden in a certain way the definition given to those professionals by French lexicographer living in Portugal Rafael Bluteau who defined them as “physicians’s cooks”. The abbreviations and chemical symbols used by physicians and surgeons to write medical prescriptions were also known to those apothecaries, who didn’t work in an arbitrary way as litterature states, but with suitable knowledge. Apart from selling pigments, they also supplied paints to different people in the districts of Sabará and Ouro Preto. Painters such as Manoel da Costa Ataíde and Manoel Ribeiro Rosa were their clients and a list of painting materials of the latter was found on vouchers and orders consulted in the field.
