Resumo: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is one of the most prevalent forms of arrhythmia that carries an increased risk of stroke which, in turn, is strongly associated with cognitive decline. The majority of dementia cases are caused by Alzheimer’s disease (AD) with obscure pathogenesis. While the exact mechanisms are unknown, the role of inflammatory processes and infectious agents have recently been implicated in both AD and AF, suggesting a common link between these maladies. Here, we present the main shared pathways underlying arrhythmia and memory loss. The overlapping predictive biomarkers and emerging joint pharmacological approaches are also discussed.

A maioria dos casos de demência é causada pela doença de Alzheimer (DA) com patogênese obscura. Embora os mecanismos exatos sejam desconhecidos, o papel dos processos inflamatórios e dos agentes infecciosos foi recentemente implicado na DA e na FA, sugerindo uma ligação comum entre essas doenças. Aqui, apresentamos as principais vias compartilhadas subjacentes à arritmia e à perda de memória. A sobreposição de biomarcadores preditivos e abordagens farmacológicas conjuntas emergentes também são discutidas.CNPq - Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e TecnológicoFAPEMIG - Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de Minas GeraisCAPES - Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível SuperiorOutra AgênciaengUniversidade Federal de Minas GeraisUFMGBrasilCOLTEC - COLEGIO TECNICOFAR - DEPARTAMENTO DE ANÁLISES CLÍNICAS E TOXICOLÓGICASICB - DEPARTAMENTO DE FARMACOLOGIAInternational Journal of Molecular SciencesDoença de AlzheimerFibrilação atrialAnti-InflamatóriosArritmias cardíacasDemênciaCélulas endoteliaisBiomarcadoresAlzheimer’s diseaseAnti-inflammatory therapyArrhythmiaAtrial fibrillationDementiaEndothelial damageInfectionInflammationMicrobiomePredictive biomarkersInflammatory and infectious processes serve as links between atrial fibrillation and Alzheimer’s diseaseProcessos inflamatórios e infecciosos servem como elos entre a fibrilação atrial e a doença de Alzheimerinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/articlehttps://www.mdpi.com/1422-0067/21/9/3226Gabriela Lopes MartinsRita Carolina Figueiredo DuarteMarat Alexandrovich MukhamedyarovAndrás PalotásCláudia Natália FerreiraHelton José dos Reisapplication/pdfinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccessreponame:Repositório Institucional da UFMGinstname:Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG)instacron:UFMGLICENSELicense.txtLicense.txttext/plain;
