Resumo: This article aims to understand the representations about physical education presented at the Glória Public Lectures, from 1870 to 1879, in Rio de Janeiro. We used as sources the conferences published in periodicals of the time, especially the Popular Conferences, and in the collection of the lectures given by Counselor Manoel Francisco Correia, always trying to understand physical education within its social and cultural context of the time. In this documentation, physical education appears as linked to school hygiene and as one of the strategies to build the Brazilian nation.

Usamos como fuentes las conferencias publicadas en impresos periódicos de la época, especialmente las Conferencias Populares, y en la recopilación de las conferencias proferidas por el Consejero Manoel Francisco Correia, siempre tratando de entender la educación física dentro de su contexto social y cultural de la época. En esta documentación, la educación física aparece como ligada a la higiene escolar y como una de las estrategias para construir la nación brasileña.Este artigo tem como objetivo compreender as representações sobre a educação física apresentadas nas Conferências Públicas da Glória, nos anos de 1870 a 1879, no Rio de Janeiro. Para isso, tornou-se fonte as conferências publicadas em impressos periódicos da época, especialmente o Conferências Populares, e na coletânea das conferências proferias pelo Conselheiro Manoel Francisco Correia, sempre tentando entender a educação física dentro do seu contexto social e cultural da época.
