Resumo: This is a bibliographical study, characterized as an essay of the work “The Coming of Age” by the French philosopher Simone de Beauvoir (1908-1986). The aim of the study was to discuss issues related to time, age, old age and aging, in addition to addressing their interrelationships. Beauvoir's technique focused on immersing in the thinking and feeling of older people, highlighting historical elements to broaden understanding of the ways in which the psyche of individuals and society related to old age. Beauvoir characterized modern society as competitive, productive, sexist, valuing the functionality and beauty of bodies, and therefore responsible for the removal of older people from the labor market. This text is an invitation to reflect on the ways we recognize and admit the changes that time has on our bodies and the way we generally treat older people.

El objetivo del estudio fue discutir temas relacionados con el tiempo, la edad, la vejez y el envejecimiento, además de abordar sus interrelaciones. La técnica de Beauvoir se centró en sumergirse en el pensamiento y el sentimiento de las personas mayores, destacando elementos históricos para ampliar la comprensión de las formas en que la psique de los individuos y la sociedad se relaciona con la vejez. Beauvoir caracterizó a la sociedad moderna como competitiva, productiva, sexista, valorando la funcionalidad y la belleza de los cuerpos y, por tanto, responsable de la eliminación de las personas mayores del mercado laboral. Este texto es una invitación a reflexionar sobre las formas en que reconocemos y admitimos los cambios que el tiempo tiene en nuestro cuerpo y la forma en que generalmente tratamos a las personas mayores.Trata-se de um estudo de natureza bibliográfica, caracterizado como um ensaio da obra “Velhice” da filósofa francesa Simone de Beauvoir (1908-1986). Objetivo do estudo foi discutir questões relativas ao tempo, à idade, à velhice e ao envelhecimento, além de abordar suas inter-relações. A técnica de Beauvoir incidiu em imergir no pensamento e sentimento das pessoas idosas, destacando elementos históricos para ampliar a compreensão dos modos como a psique dos indivíduos e da sociedade se relacionavam com a velhice. Beauvoir caracterizou a sociedade moderna como competitiva, produtiva, machista, valorizadora da funcionalidade e beleza dos corpos, e, portanto, responsável pelo afastamento dos mais velhos do mercado de trabalho.
