THE FIRST STEPS OF WOMEN’S TABLE TENNIS IN THE CITY OF RIO DE JANEIRO (1902-1949)

Resumo: The aim of this work was to structure the past of women's table tennis during the first half of the 20th century, focusing specifically on the city of Rio de Janeiro, which was behind the organization of the first national championships with the participation of women. It is, therefore, a work of a historiographical nature, with a qualitative and exploratory approach with documentary searches in newspapers of the time and discussions guided by the literature relevant to the topic. The newspapers of the time were consulted from the Hemeroteca Digital collection, which searched for the occurrence of keywords related to women's table tennis. Based on the information found, it was expected not only to record the names, clubs and achievements of pioneering players who were not yet part of official records and documents, but also to provoke necessary reflections on events that echo to the present day. It was found, among other things, that women were prevented from competing in official competitions until 1940, and, even when included in these contexts, they had a trajectory marked by neglect, reservations and well-defined limits.

Se trata, por tanto, de un trabajo de carácter historiográfico, con un enfoque cualitativo y exploratorio con búsquedas documentales en periódicos de la época y discusiones guiadas por la literatura relevante al tema. Se consultaron los periódicos de la época de la colección Hemeroteca Digital, que buscó la aparición de palabras clave relacionadas con el tenis de mesa femenino. A partir de la información encontrada, se esperaba no sólo registrar los nombres, clubes y logros de jugadores pioneros que aún no formaban parte de registros y documentos oficiales, sino también provocar las necesarias reflexiones sobre hechos que resuenan hasta la actualidad. Se constató, entre otras cosas, que las mujeres estuvieron impedidas de competir en competencias oficiales hasta 1940 y, aun incluidas en estos contextos, tuvieron una trayectoria marcada por el abandono, las reservas y los límites bien definidos.O intuito deste trabalho foi estruturar o passado do tênis de mesa feminino durante a primeira metade do século XX, debruçando-se especificamente sobre a cidade do Rio de Janeiro, a qual esteve por trás da organização dos primeiros campeonatos de abrangência nacional com a participação das mulheres. Trata-se, portanto, de um trabalho de caráter historiográfico, de abordagem qualitativa e exploratória com buscas documentais em jornais da época e discussões norteadas pela literatura pertinente ao tema. Os jornais da época foram consultados a partir do acervo da Hemeroteca Digital, no qual buscou-se pela ocorrência de palavras-chave relacionadas ao tênis de mesa feminino. A partir das informações encontradas, esperava-se não apenas registrar os nomes, clubes e conquistas de jogadoras pioneiras que ainda não faziam parte dos registros e documentos oficiais, como também provocar reflexões necessárias sobre acontecimentos que ecoam até os dias atuais.
