Resumo: The objective of this study was to investigate the clarity between reasons for practicing sports and the training time of university athletes. 90 university students were evaluated, who responded to sociodemographic questionnaires and the Participation Motivation Questionnaire (PMQ). The athletes were categorized into two groups based on their self-declared training time: over eight years (>8) and under (<8). Descriptive data are in median (Md) and interquartile range (25-75%), and the Mann-Whitney U test and Spearman brightness test were applied (p<0.05). The most relevant domains, groups (<8) and (>8) were, respectively: Competition (Md= 4.50; 4.50); Technical Competence (Md= 4.33; 4.50); Physical Fitness (Md= 4.25; 4.00). The overall median, in the domains, Social Recognition (Md= 2.86); Fun (Md= 3.25); and Affiliation (Md= 3.33) obtained lower scores. The main reasons for practicing sports were those associated with competition, however, the training time, group (>8), presented itself with the “social recognition” dimension.
