Resumo: The present article proposes to bring to the margin which psychiatric institutions were founded until the year 1950 in the State of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), and which researches produced by historians of formation on these institutions. We seek to carry out this analysis through two parts: the first on the historiographical references about the Hospital Psiquiátrico São Pedro (HPSP) and its formation; and the second part regarding the existing academic research on psychiatric institutions created after the HPSP, revealing, in part, the developments of Psychiatric History in RS
