Resumo: The present work articulates the conce pts of metropoly, colony, empire and colonial system in order to verify the reasonableness of the que idea that Brazil has become a colony of Britain's informal empire after the transfer of the Lusitanian court to the Rio de Janeiro. Some authors believe that the opening of ports and the commercial treaties of 1810 constituted itself as a way of informal domination of Britain Empire in Brazil toward trade. However, the correspondence of an American consul sent to Salvador in 1808 shows a fragile knowledge of the British traders on Brazil's market, which has changing the characterization of the English - Brazilian commercial relationships in the early 19th century and put to the test the argument that the commercial privileges of the British in Brazil have contributed to an political - economic rupture at the Portuguese Empire.
