The investiment in a coherent and persuasive discurse that sets the Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro as the conductor of a national march towards progress is the focus of this text. Having the retoric as a key of our reading, we are going to search the speeches uttered by the members of the nineteenth - century association in the 'opening anniversary sessions' during the first decade of the second reign. Such rhetorical pieces sought to build a image that articulate the three dimensions of time (past , present and future), in mode of developer a kind of progressive line, legitimating the presence of IHGB as a indispensable to reach the future prosperity, thus solving the problems of a political scene marked for the regional conflicts.
