Departing from the results of two previous studies, one in a local and the other in a regional perspective, the authors meditate about the role of newspapers in Rio Grande do Sul’s electoral campaign during the 1950’s. The first one deal with the 1950 electoral campaign through the pages of Diário de Notícias, and the second one analyze the electoral mobilization in Canoas/RS through local newspapers between 1951 and 1959. The authors establish relations between their approaches in order to a nalyze the parties’ discursive strategies, candidates and the press itself during the electoral campaigns, offering a contribution to the studies about the democratic experience of that period.
