Resumo: Electronic cigarettes (EC), popular since the last decade, consist of inhaling an aerosolized e-liquid composed of propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, flavoring essences and optionally the presence of nicotine. It emerged as a proposal that is less harmful to health in relation to conventional cigarettes (CC), attracting the younger population and raising concerns for global public health, due to its recent dissemination and limited studies on action in relation to oral health. Therefore, the objective of this work is to analyze the relationship between the use of devices and electronic cigarettes and the periodontal and peri-implant changes caused in these individuals. The searches for studies were carried out in the PubMed and SciELO databases using the descriptors ‘’e-cigarettes’’, ‘’periodontal diseases’’ and ‘’periodontal status’’ with ‘’and’’ as a complementary search tool. 77 articles were found and of these, 13 were selected, which should present periodontal and/or peri-implant evaluation in EC smokers, CC smokers and non-smokers, so that the data could be compared. There was no restriction on the year, date of publication and country of origin of the studies. 9 studies addressed the relationship between EC and periodontal condition and 4 with peri-implant condition. In general, the studies showed considerable damage to the periodontal and peri-implant condition of EC smokers, similar to CC smokers, when probing depth, clinical attachment level, plaque index, bone loss and bleeding on probing were evaluated. Therefore, it is concluded that, within the limitations of this review, CE harms the periodontal and peri-implant condition to the same extent as CC, however, more clinical research is needed to consolidate knowledge on the subject, in order to prepare dental surgeons to guide their patients about the harm to users' oral health.
