The present work results from research on the Catholic Church in the transition from the government system from monarchy to republic in the years 1889 to 1916. To analyze the period, primary sources were used: newspapers available in the digital library of the national library, legislation, pastorals written during the period and books by personalities written at the time, such as priest Júlio Maria and writer Eduardo Prado. We also used secondary sources, mainly the works of Dilermando Ramos Vieira and Carlos Roberto Jamil Cury. We identify the role of the episcopate in containing the impulses of groups opposed to the Church, such as Freemasonry and positivists.. We consider the interest of these groups in power and the symbolic disputes involved in the period. The analysis of pastorals from 1890, 1900 and 1916 explains the thinking of the Church hierarchy and the discourse of the time. The main purpose of this work is to understand the political actions of the Catholic Church in Brazil and the adaptations made by it to maintain its power and influence before the government and society.
